we're looking for an intern or two to help out around the portland office two days a week with mailings, calling record stores, filing, data entry, and other stuff starting september 2010. if you are interested email ben at killrockstars dot com. please tell us a little about yourself, your favorite krs bands (or your least favorite... be honest!), anything you would be interested in learning, etc etc.

The Future [of döner kebab] Is Now

We Thermals love to eat. We really, really, really love food. Tour, for us, is just a succession of meals and snacks with some incidental rock shows squeezed in. Long drives between cities, no matter what continent we are on, MUST be punctuated by snack breaks every two hours or so.

A post-show meal is a necessity almost every night--rocking really takes it out of us. I am a person who needs to have a full stomach to fall asleep; Hutch is this way too. Kathy, Anna [sound engineer], Baptiste [tour manager], and our rotating merch beauties [Audrey, Tui, Myrria] are also big lovers of deliciousness.

In Europe and the UK, everything shuts down at about 8pm. They simply haven't heard of late night dining over there--it's about as unthinkable as having cold and hot water mixed in the same tap! So, after the show, we often feel S.O.L. for a yummy treat. There is one blessed exception to this rule--Kebab/falafel shops! Thank Allah for these places, for these Middle Eastern businessmen who understand the value of a quick, warm, salty meal at midnight or 2 am, and the irresistible allure of a rotating, sweating cone of meat under orange heat lamps in the front window.

The proprietors of döner shops are always fun people--they nearly always speak some English no matter what country you're in, they have a stern, no-B.S. approach to customer service, and they always think Americans are the most ridiculous and hilarious thing they've ever seen.

We've had so many good times in döner kebab shops!

Madrid, Spain, December 2008: After playing the Primavera Sound festival, Kathy, Hutch, and I hit up the falafel shop between the venue and our hotel. Delicious falafel sandwiches ensued. The shop was closing down but the owners let us stay and eat while they lit cigarettes and bantered with their buddies who were hanging out. After about ten minutes, the ceiling-mounted TV's switched from infomercials to awkward Greek-god themed porn!
London, England, the same tour, December 2008: After a college show at Kings College London, where the only food was cold cheese-and-cucumber sandwiches in those little triangular plastic packages from Tesco, we were HUNGRY. The front desk girl at our hotel, across from the King's Cross tube station, told us we might find a falafel shop open a few blocks away. We walked through the bitter English cold and found this warm, savory oasis of deliciousness. They had some bumpin Middle Eastern jamz playing, and the three of us (being the only three customers at that hour) started our own little dance party while we waited for our order. The guys behind the counter thought this was hilarious. They pumped up the jams and started dancing with us! Rad. We try to go back to that shop every time we're in London.
Brighton, England, June 2009: After the last show of our UK tour with the lovely Sketches, we all convened on the beach with beers and rowdy attitudes. Hutch and I, hungry as ever, went in search of a dining establishment open at this late hour. Of course, kebab to the rescue! It was a weird, slightly impersonal "fast-food" chain-style place, but still delicious. And they served french fries with your falafel sandwich, which was awesome. While we waited for our food, our entertainment was observing the last ragged stragglers of the local nightlife, drunken blokes with designer jeans and awkward haircuts, and the hilariously deadpan way the kebab shop workers dealt with them.
Paris, France, October 2009: Hutch and I, again scavenging for a late night meal, found that the only thing open near our hotel was a döner shop...no surprise. We enjoyed a delicious, cheap, greasy meal (again accompanied by french fries). As we were paying, I noticed a plate of long, skinny chili peppers on the counter. I pantomimed eating one with an inquiring look on my face (since these falafel bros didn't speak a word of English and we, being red-blooded Americans, of course don't speak a word of any other language). The guys laughed at me and tried to tell me it was too hot, and that I shouldn't eat one. Well, I had to show them who's macho--I popped the longest one in my mouth and chewed it up with a smile! Only after we left the shop did my eyes start watering, and I began hyperventilating.

Good times. I look forward to a lot more falafel sandwiches in the future. I was excited to learn today that the döner experience is about to get a lot more futuristic! I'm so glad to know that the Germans are working hard to ensure that every slice of döner meat will now be perfectly uniform and never touched by human hands! I give you...The döner-slicing robot!!!

Hutch has been so inspired by our kebab experiences that he is planning to open a kebab cart in Portland. He's going to call it The Oregon Döner. Don't tell him, but I've already placed an order for the kebab-bot as his cart-warming gift.

Hello, I (James Squeaky) would like to share a story about my adventures/highlights at SXSW.

The first I ventured into the SXSW world, I found it wholly unappealing. At some nihilist college kid clubhouse while a nervous band vainly attempted to be the room’s focus over a few trouble-makers attempts at aggravating the audience into a frenzied mosh pit, primarily consisting of people hitting back after being intentionally slammed into. The band looked worried their stuff would be destroyed. The floor could cave in. A drunk young lady jumped from nowhere, wrapping her legs around my waist, trying to drag me to the ground. Even more drunk young adults were flooding into the beyond capacity space, practically barricading the door. I was stoked to soon leave.

A restful night’s sleep followed by a grocery store finding mission and a grand salad later and I’m still in no hurry. The place I’m staying is about five miles north of downtown and I’m on bicycle. The first day out was full of frustration, meandering, backtracking and lucky guessing. After that, I trusted the newly implemented bicycle directions on googlemaps and I hesitate applause, but that’s a killer app.

An unfortunate situation on Red River and 7th; couldn’t find Beerland, finally did, but missed The Spits. I took a risk and ventured a mile to a block with only one bar, Charlies, was featuring a showcase of lo-fi rock bands. Not to be confused with Cheer Up Charlies, this was a bar with friendly bartenders and male strippers. The show was on the patio and some regulars were taking in the ridiculousness. I felt comfortable and ended up sticking around until the end of the show, even making some new friends.

Highlights: an Austin band, Harlem’s sloppy/catchy pop songs, alternating singers and instruments. The band was reckless, but still tight when it matters (like my Kiwi heroes The Clean!) and the icing was surely the brevity of their songs. I have a lot of stuff to do, so I love short songs! Smith Westerns, four awkward late teens from Chicago were a band that really impressed me. Influences from grunge, glam, other 90s pop, creating familiar sounds in a fresh perspective. Their lead guitarist shredded like he was destined for a 70s glam rock band, but without ego, as the kid looked nervous as heck and none were dressed the part. Just real honest life shredding at a minimal volume, blending blissfully with the rhythm guitar. The bassist seemed like he could have been playing Black Flag songs. Yes! Hunx and His Punx included some pretty wild front-man antics by the under-dressed Hunx. It was a loving crowd and banter was whimsical.

Thursday morning was excitement while we got ready for the KRS showcase at Cheer Up Charlies. It wasn’t long before all was smooth sailing. Talk Normal was gracious to open with booming bass/drums, murderous themes, and other dark stuff in the hot noon sun. Everyone helped eat a huge stack of breakfast burritos. Next was a band that I can’t think of any reason to not love, Grass Widow! Great songs/lyrics that stick with you. Each instrument distinct and the exciting harmonies. A highlight of the day was meeting Viv Albertine (The Slits), a classy lady with enchanting stories to tell both while she’s singing and while she’s tuning. A whole lot of people showed to not be disappointed by Explode Into Colors nailing their set. I was sipping on free expensive juice and vodka while looking at the birds in the trees over the VIP area. I can’t prove it with science, but I swear the birds were responding to the rhythmic sounds of EIC. Thanks for the tweets! Quasi rocked out really hard and damn are they so talented and natural at their instruments. Epic jams! Horse Feathers transitioned us to early evening, Justin’s lovely crystal voice sweeping through the dirt and into the Texas sky. I think everyone liked the show and the convenience of the proximity to the port-a-potties.

I had been looking forward to this “Night of Rage II” event on the East side. Benny and I stacked our messenger bags with beers to fortify our rage, but everyone seemed already exhausted. Caught a few great performances. XYX, a blistering bullshit-free garage rock guitar and drums duo from Mexico with a great 7.” Live they met my high expectations. Eternal Tapestry are Portland buddies, and I’ve seen them play many times in many different configurations. Their current focused five-piece incarnation make them a band to watch out for. Strong bass playing, wild saxophone, double guitarists and exceptional drumming. Watching them in a room of mostly vacated audience, I felt like it could have been as good as seeing Hawkwind in 1970. Also dug Broken Water from Olympia. They reminded me of some of the better things going on in 1995-1997.

Friday morning I took a jog around the residential neighborhood I was staying, tripping out on the local crows wild spring mating feather flashdances. I totally love cactuses and huge prehistoric looking stabby plants and there was a ton of that stuff.

More confident about navigational routing, it took half the time to get down to the East side on the speedy road-bike. Ended up at Domy Books as Portland’s underage skate punk weirdos, White Fang were gearing up… and better yet, Lisa from Explode Into Colors played additional drums. Not the audience participation frenzy I’m used to seeing at a Portland Fang show; it gave me a chance to meditate on the band’s bratty pop punk anthems. Every city needs a band like White Fang to keep the old punks on their toes. Met up with Benny to check out the French Legation Museum. Relaxed on a grassy hill to the Woods’ blissful jams. I bailed early to get a spot right up front at the alternate stage for Pierced Arrows. It sounded great and loud and some of their lyrics really make me think about life in a optimistic way. Then it was back to Cheer Up Charlies to see my good friends Abe Vigoda. What can I say, these dudes are so dear to my heart and rule too high to die.

Just when I felt like everything was perfect, I hit a couple-hour lull, hanging out alone, saw some bands I didn’t care for, killed time waiting for the B.P.P. showcase at The Broken Neck. A bit out of the way, but I found the warehouse space in a row of auto repair garages. Felt at home, like the kinds of places I am used to playing on tour. A grip of friends from all over to catch up with. The DJ played Sleetmute Nightmute and was interested to hear about what their live shows were like; I sure saw a lot of them in 2001-2003. In a sensible world, Will of Weak Sisters would be funded to explore his sonic sculptures of feedback compositions on a massive scale. For now, I can occasionally enjoy his quick visionary portals in 5 minute bites. I’ve seen him play enough for perspective on the range of his vision. After he played, I met up with an old friend I hadn’t seen in years and the evening descended to a heavy blur.

Saturday, slept in for awhile. I can’t explain my disappointment to find the weather had dropped from 65 the day before to around 40 and continued to drop as the day proceeded. Not dressed appropriately on what ended up being the day when I walked around a ton with Benny getting lost. Tried to see KIT and soon realized the place we were trying to reach was much too far to walk in the cold. We found Spiderhouse, a spot that seemed like such a cool place to hang out, but again, the cold made it a drag. Still, I forgot my troubles watching Dum Dum Girls and was pleasantly surprised at just how blessed-out and still dark, dark they sounded. Somewhere in a realm of Black Tambourine and Quix*o*tic and other sour-mood pop bands I will never get tired of. I’m going to become a fan of them on facebook for sure! Our reason for braving the cold was Grass Widow, who I closed my eyes and made a wish for them to magically manifest finger-warmers, as the temperature was not an easy obstacle to play through. They persevered and I tried to imagine how great their new songs are going to sound pressed on their upcoming record! Can’t wait!

The remainder of the night was more hanging out with old high school friend followed by an excruciatingly early and hung over flight home. I was kept entertained by Benny illustrating comics over every page of the inflight magazine and the amazing luck of Dewey from Eternal Tapestries having the seat next to us. There was so much to talk about!

When Xiu Xiu return from the UK, they’ll head out on their US tour. On the road, the band will be fundraising for At The Crossroads, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that helps street youth through counseling, outreach, and other services.

The band is asking for donations of any amount, and certain amounts of donation will come with specific prizes.

$1 (show only): Everyone who donates a dollar or more at the show will get together at the end of the show for a big group picture. The band will then post these pictures online.

$5: The band will mail you a postcard, probably made by Xiu Xiu, sent while on the road.

$10: Xiu Xiu will email one of a kind picture of the band on the road + description of what's going on before and after, not during.

$30: The band will mail you any random thing bought at a gas station, thrift store, or anywhere! from the road

$50: The band will mail you a special David Horvitz collection of Xiu Xiu photos.

If a collective total of $5000 of donations is reached, Xiu Xiu will release a never before released song, a collaboration with Mary Pearson (High Places), for free to download.

Please note: Everything but the group pictures will be offered online and at the show.

At the end of fundraising, the band will read out the names of everyone who donated on camera and will put the video online.

last night was the first time i'd seen quasi since they opened for elliott smith at la luna in portland--- way back in may 1998. i was a sophomore in high school at the time. some how i was able to let my mom talk me into going to the show with some friends (i think my dad was out of town at the time or something...) my friend dennis did a u-turn on the burnside bridge! haha... anyhow, quasi was awesome last night. fun times. see them on tour!

Help the All-Ages Movement Project win $50,000

Everyone come together to help support all-ages music everywhere!

Pepsi is offering a $50,000 grant to ten ideas/organizations voted on by the public. The All-Ages Movement Project (AMP) is a non-profit that aims to advocate for and support people nationwide in starting, running and maintaining all-ages arts and music spaces. These kinds of spaces are critical to the kind of art and community we all care about, but there is not a lot of infrastructure in place to help people learn how to do this, or to help them network with and learn from one another beyond their own towns, typically. AMP is currently in 10th place, a testament to how supportive its various constituent communities have been given that they're up against well-funded national organizations like AmeriCorps that have large budgets and staff to help them succeed.

As we all know, the Pepsi factor can be sensitive in DIY/punk communities, but AMP made the decision to participate in this grant competition only after taking advisement from its board of all-ages venues, organizations and activists. There would be no branding or logo obligations - just a donation that would make a lot of cool shit possible. People can vote once a day for AMP at:

It would be awesome if you wanted to contribute. It doesn’t have to be fancy or well-worded, we’d just like you to leave a record of your experience and get an idea of what Bikini Kill means to you. Maybe it’s your reaction to a song we wrote, something weird that happened at one of our shows, a personal anecdote or just WHATEVER. Send yr story to bkillarchive@gmail.com and we will post it or just leave a comment somewhere on the site. You can also send us images to post.

Please help us spread the word. To document the history (or herstory) of the band it is necessary to include an oral history from “the fans”. We say fans for lack of a better word—a more expansive term would be inclusive of friends, peers, comrades, co-conspirators and imply participation rather than an audience separate from the band—which is what we hope to achieve with this interactive approach.

I remember I was dating this guy when I was 13 in like, 1995, and we got really competitive over who knew more about music. Then I bought the first Kill Rock Stars compilation and was like, ‘fuck it, I’ll take my own music for myself.’ I’d discovered Bikini Kill and he couldn’t have them. I bought every 7″ and album I could find, as well as anything else the band members were in (The Frumpies, Suture, The Fakes, etc.). The songs validated every twisted, sticky teenage girl experience I went through and anti-pleasure dissertation was the only thing I needed when said guy betrayed me in the most high school possible way. When I was 15 I wrote a letter thanking Kathleen Hanna, and she sent me back all her fanzines and ‘The Most Beautiful Girl is a Dead Girl’ and a bunch of stickers and a note that said “Don’t let them get you down.” That year I formed my own all girl band, and now I treat adolescent girls who are trauma survivors. It’s always extremely hard for me to stop myself from making them mix CDs starting with White Boy. It’s 15 years later and I still tell people that Bikini Kill is my all-time favorite band. Particularly my clients.

just curious.

UPDATE: the change of people asking you to be a "friend" on myspace and people asking you to be a "fan" on facebook is what made me think about this. it's esp. weird when it's from friends. aren't they happy enough with me being a friend? i got to be a fan too?

well that and the combination of logging into my old band's myspace for the first time in forever and seeing that all the messages were from bands i had never heard of telling me to buy their album on itunes.
