this is not a robbery

adam kurland, the director of the punks' "air it out" video is showing his new film at the tribeca film fest! check it out if you can...

In the eight decades of his life, J.L. "Red" Rountree had been known as an upstanding, straightlaced guy. He was a successful Texas businessman, a devoted husband to his wife of 50 years, and a loving father to his stepson. Though he had fallen on hard times in his later years, no one could have imagined that this frail 87-year-old would walk into a bank with an envelope marked "robbery" and demand cash. In the years after his first heist, Rountree was arrested three times and finally sentenced to a Florida prison, where he was the state's oldest inmate. In taped interviews, Rountree, who had become a media sensation, tells his story in his own words-from his childhood on a farm to his successful business making winches to the loss of his wealth in bad investments. After a series of tragedies in his personal life, Rountree says he "went crazy." Though he didn't need the money (Social Security provided enough for him to live on), he was looking for some thrills and decided to take a crack at bank robbery.

Weaving together news footage, quirky animated reenactments, and interviews with attorneys, acquaintances, and the detectives and judges associated with his case, this documentary probes how a man who had never committed a crime in his life became a serial bank robber when he could have easily been kicking back in an easy chair. This is not simply an exploration of one man's descent into a life of crime-it is an infectiously upbeat and humorous story of a man who didn't play by the rules. Rountree refused to waste his remaining years playing shuffleboard; instead he chose to sink his false teeth into life. . . albeit in a grievously illegal way.

my interview with the weekly volcano!

I WAS JUST INTERVIEWED BY THE WEEKLY VOLCANO ON THE NOISE ORDINANCE. I WILL POST THE ARTICLE WHEN I T COMES OUT, HERE IS THE TEXT OF THE FULL INTERVIEW:

- In your opinion, what is behind the move for a noise ordinance? Who
supports it and why?

IN A LETTER POSTED ON OLYBLOG, JEFF KINGSBURY SAID:

“Thank you for writing. I did, indeed, request this particular review by the Planning Commission. I want to assure you that the process includes notification to all stakeholders that we are able to identify. This certainly includes nightclub owners and operators in the downtown area. The ordinance review is in anticipation of housing in our downtown. In fact, we have already identified a project that is scheduled to break ground in the near future, near Olympia Federal Savings.

I will make certain that our planning staff is diligent about their notification process. I am not certain if the Council will hold a public hearing on this, as it would be an amendment only. We currently have a noise ordinance in place. We would not, however, pass it on a "first and final" reading basis, as there would likely be no need. Nor can I be certain that the entire council is prepared to pass an ordinance of this kind.
Again, thank you.
Best regards,
Jeff Kingsbury”

THE PART THAT WORRIES ME IS “THE ORDINANCE REVIEW IS IN ANTICIPATION OF HOUSING IN OUR DOWNTOWN”. THERE IS ALREADY HOUSING IN OUR DOWNTOWN. I LIVE DOWNTOWN AND HAVE LIVED DOWNTOWN FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS. THERE ISN’T A PROBLEM WITH NOISE AFTER 10PM AS FAR AS I CAN TELL. I CAN ONLY GUESS THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO ‘CLEAN UP’ DOWNTOWN, IE REMOVIE UNDESIRABLE ELEMENENTS SO THEY CAN BUILD CONDOS. I THINK THERE SHOULD BE HOUSING FOR ALL INCOMES DOWNTOWN, BUT WHEN RICH PEOPLE (WHO CAN AFFORD CONDOS) ARE PRIORITIZED OVER THE EXISTING PEOPLE WHO LIVE DOWNTOWN (MOSTLY WORKING POOR PEOPLE) THERE IS A PROBLEM. I ALSO FOUND THIS QUOTE INTERESTING:

“One of four Council’s focus areas is, “To invest in Downtown so that
more people live, work, learn, shop, play and enjoy downtown.” As the
City continues to make investments and residential housing units
increase, we anticipate a growing concern regarding noise. The City
adopted state statutes on noise control. The state statutes recognize
that inadequately controlled noise adversely affects people’s health,
safety, and welfare, the value of property, and the environment. “

http://www.ci.olympia.wa.us/documents/OlympiaPlanningCommission/040708/Noise_Ordinance_OPC040708_STF.pdf

I AM WORRIED THAT THE CITY IS MORE CONCERNED WITH PROPERTY VALUES THAN WITH SERVING THE EXISTING DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY. IF THERE WAS A NOISE PROBLEM, THERE WOULD BE CITIZEN COMPLAINTS. AS I UNDERSTAND IT, THAT JUST ISN’T HAPPENING. I CAN ONLY CONCLUDE THAT THE CITY IS MORE INTERESTED IN ATTRACTED RICH PEOPLE (CONDO BUYERS, PROPERTY INVESTERS) THAN IN SERVING OLYMPIA’S CURRENT DOWNTOWN RESIDENTS AND WORKERS, MANY OF WHOM ARE SELF-EMPLOYED MUSICIANS (AND ARTISTS) TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING PLAYING SHOWS AND WORKING ODD JOBS TO PAY THE INCREASING RENT.

- Is any noise ordinance bad news for Olympia, or is the proposed
amendment particularly unfair? Can you think of any possible compromise
here?

MY PROBLEM WITH THE NOISE ORDINANCE IS THAT THIS IS NOT COMING FROM WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. THERE NEEDS TO BE A PUBLIC HEARING AND AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT LIVE MUSIC IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF DOWNTOWN OLYMPIA THAT NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED. SOMEONE ONLINE SUGGESTED THE CITY SHOULD GO DOWNTOWN AND TAKE CURRENT DECIBEL READINGS TO FIND OUT WHAT THE LIMIT NEEDS TO BE IN ORDER TO INCLUDE PROVISIONS THAT ALLOW FOR LIVE CONCERTS. I AGREE WITH THAT.

- What do you fear the effect of passing the noise ordinance amendment
would be on Olympia?

I AM AFRAID THAT DOWNTOWN VENUES WON’T BE ABLE TO HAVE LIVE MUSIC AFTER 10PM. THIS WOULD NOT ONLY IMPACT OLYMPIA RESIDENTS NEGATIVELY, IT WOULD TAKE INCOME AWAY FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES, SELF-EMPLOYED MUSICIANS AND ROB US OF OUR COMMUNITY. THERE HAS BEEN A VITAL MUSIC SCENE IN OLYMPIA AT LEAST SINCE THE 1980’S. OLYMPIA IS KNOWN ALL OVER THE WORLD FOR IT’S MUSIC. THIS INCLUDES BANDS, SOLO PERFORMERS, FESTIVALS, RECORD LABELS AND VENUES. THE CITY SHOULD RECOGNIZE THERE IS A LOCAL ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL IMPACT TO THEIR DECISION.

- Do you expect to be able to stop this from happening?

WE NEED A PUBLIC HEARING. EVERYONE WHO CARES ABOUT MUSIC IN OLYMPIA NEEDS TO BE VIGILANT ON THIS ISSUE. IF THE PEOPLE ARE HEARD, WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO STOP IT.

-Is there a noise "problem" in Olympia?

NO. I LIVE DOWNTOWN. THE ONLY TIME NOISE BUGS ME IS WHEN THERE IS CONSTRUCTION BEFORE NOON, BUT I UNDERSTAND THAT’S JUST A PART OF LIVING IN A COMMERICAL AREA. PEOPLE WHO MOVE DOWNTOWN NEED TO REALIZE THERE IS GOING TO BE LIVE MUSIC HAPPENING. SOMETIMES KAROKE BUGS ME, BUT I THINK ALL THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IS FOR CERTAIN VENUES TO KEEP THEIR DOORS SHUT IN THE SUMMER TIME. IT’S NOT REALLY A HUGE PROBLEM. I THINK YOU COULD JUST WALK OVER TO THE BAR AND ASK THEM TO CLOSE THEIR DOOR AND THEY WOULD PROBABLY DO IT. THERE REALLY ISN’T A NEED TO INVOLVE THE POLICE. DURING ARTSTWALK AND LAKEFAIR THERE IS SOMETIMES REALLY OBNOXIOUS MUSIC DOWNTOWN THAT GOES ON LATE INTO THE NIGHT, BUT IT’S FINE BECAUSE ITS GOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY TO HAVE EVENTS WHERE PEOPLE OCCUPY PUBLIC SPACE. I ACTUALLY THINK WE NEED TO BE TOLERANT OF DIFFERENCES AND GET OVER IT.

- Do you think the process being employed by the city council leading up
to the consideration is fair to all sides? Do you think the city council
already knows what it wants to do?

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THEY ARE BEING SNEAKY BY TRYING TO ADD THIS TO A PREVIOUSLY EXISTING AMMENDMENT THAT APPLIES TO RESIDENTIAL AREAS. DOWNTOWN IS PRIMARILY A COMMERICIAL DISTRICT AT THIS TIME. AS A LONG TERM RESIDENT OF DOWNTOWN, I AM HAPPY TO HEAR THE CITY WANTS TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO MOVE DOWNTOWN, BUT IT NEEDS TO BE CONCERNED WITH THE NEEDS AND INTERESTS OF PEOPLE OF ALL INCOME LEVELS AND THEY NEED TO MAKE PROVISIONS FOR THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE SO THAT IT DOESN’T NEEDLESSLY SUFFER AS S RESULT.

- What do you expect the Olympia music and art community to do if the
amendment is passed? What will the reaction be?

HOPEFULLY IT WON’T GET TO THAT STAGE, BUT IF IT DOES WE WILL COME UP WITH COMMUNITY ACTIONS OF CREATIVE RESISTANCE THAT WILL SHOW OUR UNITY AND VIGILANCE. THE OLYMPIA MUSIC SCENE HAS A LONG HISTORY OF BEING POLITICAL AND WE ARE NOT GOING TO ACCEPT THIS. THIS IS OUR TOWN. TO QUOTE PUNK ROCK PATTI SMITH “WE CREATED IT, LET’S TAKE IT OVER!”

Anything else you'd like to add would be greatly appreciated. I tried to
take it easy on you seeing as your letter already lays all of it out- and
no doubt took a while to type.
Thanks,
-matt

What can people do to help stop the noise ordinance amendment?

YESTERDAY I SENT THIS OUT IN THE KILL ROCK STARS NEWSLETTER, IN HOPES THAT OLYMPIA MUSIC FANS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD WILL WRITE THE CITY COUNCIL:

http://krshijinx.blogspot.com/2008/04/we-oppose-noise-ordinance-in-olympia.html

I KNOW OF AT LEAST ONE PERSON FROM AUSTRALIA WHO LIVES IN BERLIN WHO WROTE THE CITY LAST NIGHT. I THINK WE SHOULD FORWARD THIS NEWS TO OUR FRIENDS AROUND THE WORLD AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO WRITE THE CITY. Send letters to:__citycouncil@ci.olympia.wa.us_

I ALSO FOUND THIS ON OLY BLOG TODAY:

Submitted by Bauermeister on Fri, 04/11/2008 - 7:16am.
Hello all -
Right now I think the biggest issue is that, as per Kingsbury's Answer, the city council is prepared to go forward with this without hearing any more public comment. Write to the planning commission BEFORE MAY 5TH when they make their presentation on the matter. Urge that this be brought before a full council meeting so that more than one or two representatives from each side can be heard.
If you send an email to: olympiaismusic@gmail.com (that's, olympia-is-music as one word), you will automatically be sent back an email which contains a call to action, the address to which you can write the planning commission (Olympia Planning Commission, PO Box 1967, Olympia WA 98507), and links to the actual texts of the amendment, the ordinance, and the general WA ordinance upon which it's based.
OLYMPIA=MUSIC=OLYMPIA=MUSIC=OLYMPIA=MUSIC=OLYMPIA=MUSIC

SO YEAH, JUST MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD, GO TO THE CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS, WRITE TO THE OLYMPIAN AND MAKE YOUR OPINION KNOWN.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

thanks,

We Oppose the Noise Ordinance in Olympia!

The City of Olympia is trying to pass a noise ordinance that would set a sound limit of 60Db for downtown after 10PM. This would be measured from the property line of the person complaining, not from inside their home or business. 60 Db is not very loud and in all likely-hood this will ban shows downtown. Rumor has it that the council members behind this ordinance are trying to make downtown more "condo-friendly". Little do they know! Downtown is built on landfill and most buildings will not survive a major earthquake. Who wants to buy property with that risk? Anyhow, that's beside the point.

We are asking Kill Rock Stars Mail Order Freaks (and their allies) to write to the city council and ask them to hold a public hearing on the Noise Ordinance. Tell them that the downtown Olympia music scene is important and why! Tell them how much you love Nirvana, Beat Happening, Sleater-Kinney, Unwound, Bikini Kill, C-Average, the Old Haunts, Bangs, The Tight Bros from Way Back When, Mocket, the Punks and Witchy Pool! Tell them about the time you came to the International Pop Underground Festival or how it felt to meet your first girlfriend at Homo A Go-Go! Tell them how you found out about Riot Grrl and then volunteered at Ladyfest where you live! And find a way to connect this to the proposed Noise Ordinance, which will penalize musicians, concert goers and local businesses.

Send letters to:

Here's my letter (spun to appeal to the city's stated values of diversity, economic prosperity and patronage of the arts):

Dear City Council Members,

As a self-employed musician, a long time downtown resident and a worker in the music industry I am writing in opposition of the noise ordinance. I first moved into the Martin Apartments in 1988. I was 18, a musician and active member of the local Olympia music scene. Nirvana, Calvin Johnson's Beat Happening and Melvins were just a few of the terrific local bands that played in downtown art galleries and all ages venues on a regular basis. One of those groups went on to become one of the most celebrated bands in the history of rock-n-roll. Had the noise ordinance existed then, Nirvana would not have been able to play live in Olympia.

A more recent example of a musician who came out of the local downtown music scene and has gone on to international fame is K recording artist Kimya Dawson, whose music is prominently featured in the Academy Award winning movie Juno. I strongly suggest you go see it and reconsider your decision to pass a noise ordinance that will hinder rather than foster the vital music community that has existed here since the early 1980's.

In the past few decades the local music community has gone through many changes and is now thriving, diverse and more tolerant of cultural differences. Not only are there a plethora of places to play and styles of live music for concertgoers to chose from, there are now live DJ nights at many dance clubs downtown, including Jakes on 4th, a local gay bar. The Brotherhood , le Voyeur and QB prioritize the safety of female, trans and/or gay clientele as a matter of policy. Ben Moore's has jazz nights and also features local blues artists, while the Mark, the Midnight Sun, the China Clipper, El Guanaco and the Vault often feature R&B, Hip Hop and all kinds of dance music, McCoy's and the 4th Ave are just two of the many downtown venues who throw alternative rock shows for the over 21 crowd. The Capitol Theater, the Eagles Hall, Traditions and the Washington Center host World Music events several times a year, while the Olympia Ballroom is regularly used for wedding receptions and teen dances. Irish Music can often be heard at Plenty, and Karoke happens at several bars weekly, offering amateur singers a place to practice. Everything from Electronic Music to Heavy Metal, to Avant Garde Experimental Noise music shows also happen regularly downtown. All-Ages Punk shows have occurred less often since Manium closed, but hopefully that will change, as providing misfit teens a space to be creative and see music (rather than to party and get in trouble) should be valued by all.

In addition to diversity at the local level, Olympia is culturally enriched by its international reputation: young people from Tokyo, Mexico City, Madrid, Berlin, Beijing, London and Tel Aviv make pilgrimages here, providing local musicians with an informal network of cultural exchange. Many students come to TESC from all over the U.S. to start bands. The city should recognize Olympia is a tourist attraction and destination for young people from all over the world because of the downtown music scene.

Local musicians not only have achieved notoriety and international prestige but work hard to build community and promote diversity and equality in the arts. In the 90's Olympia was the birthplace of the Riot Grrl movement, home to internationally known female-fronted bands such as Bratmobile, Sleater-Kinney and my own group, Bikini Kill. This trend continues today with Scream Club, Twin and Spider and the Webs. Riot Grrl is not only a crucial political movement for female musicians, it is largely regarded at one of the starting points of Third Wave Feminism--a version of feminism that is arguably more diverse and inclusive than its 1970's predecessor.

Olympia has been the founding city for several well-attended independent culture, art and music festivals that draw a crowd from all over the world such as the International Pop Underground festival (IPU), Yo-Yo A Go-Go, Homo A Go-Go, the Experimental Music Festival and Ladyfest. Ladyfest started here in 2000 and has since happened in over 50 cities around the world. Several influential independent record labels started here, such as K Records, Chainsaw and Kill Rock Stars. K and Kill Rock Stars continue to do business here and represent Olympia in the Punk, Indie and Underground Music world.

There will be an economic impact to your decision as well as a cultural one. It was Sleater-Kinney that got Olympia mentioned in Time magazine as "the hippest city in the West". When I first started going to see live music downtown I was a young musician who went to Capital High School. Downtown was deserted because the mall had put the department stores out of business. Local artists and musicians were responsible for revitalizing downtown and this continues today, with local record labels, venues, and independently owned record stores being a part of the economy and downtown landscape.

At the very least, this needs to be addressed in a public forum. The survival of downtown Olympia as a vital, internationally known cultural mecca is dependent on the continual existence of live music venues and dance clubs for people of all ages. The cultural significance of the local music scene may not be visible to everyone but many people who live, do business, work and/or visit here treasure it. I can think of several music history books that cite Olympia as a vital part of music culture and imagine this will only grow over time. The City Council needs to recognize the Olympia music scene as a local resource that needs to be sustained, honored and protected-not penalized by an unnecessary noise ordinance that will prohibit live music events.

Sincerely,

Tobi Vail

we had summer for a second this weekend...

farmer got hot enough to dig a wallow by the house.  the weeping cherry tree is starting to bloom.  it was beautiful and warm and then today -- hail and snow.  wtf?  is this global warming or does it happen every year and we all just have really short memories?  i don't know.  but i think opting out of the Kyoto Protocol is a genius idea, Mr. Bush, i really do.  oh, and opening up more national forests to logging.  and gutting the species protection legislation for the EPA.  because having the US oil companies experience a 24% increase in net income in the fourth quarter of 2007 -- with revenues of $329.6 billion -- is (or should be) everyone's highest goal.  after all, when oil execs get richer, that money trickles down to the rest of us.  who then spend that extra money on... gas... at record high prices... wait a minute...?  hm.

betcha didn't see this rant coming.  neither did i, i was just posting a picture of my cute doggie.
