Elliott Smith reissues, FREE unreleased mp3

Kill Rock Stars is very excited to announce that on April 6th, 2010 we will be adding Elliott Smith’s Roman Candle and From a Basement on the Hill records to our catalog.

Roman Candle is Elliott Smith’s first solo album and was originally released on Portland’s Cavity Search Records in 1994.

Roman Candle had quite an impact on Slim Moon, Kill Rock Stars' founder: "In 1994, I had been asked to be on this five-person solo-act tour called Pop Chord with Tammy Watson, Carrie Akre, Sean Croghan and Elliott Smith. The first night at the Crocodile in Seattle, I didn't pay too much attention and people talked all thru Elliott's set. Sean Croghan got up next and said "all of you people who just talked through Elliott's set are bummed because you just misssed something very very special." The next night of the tour, at The Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco, I listened very closely to Elliott's set, and it was basically one of those life-changing moments. Instead of watching the rest of the performers, I went out to the tour van and popped Roman Candle into the player, and listened to it on endless repeat for the rest of the evening and beyond. It completely blew my mind. I have never heard music as heartwrenchingly, gut-checkingly honest, intimate, and wise - before or since."

Roman Candle has been remastered for the re-release by Larry Crane, editor of Tape Op Magazine and archivist for Elliott's family.

Larry explains, “The intention that I had was to make the album more listenable. I felt that a lot of the guitar “squeaks” were jarring and very loud, and that many of the hard consonants and “S” sounds were jarring and scratchy sounding. I felt by reducing these noises that the music would become more inviting and the sound would serve the songs better. When I went to Roger Seibel's SAE Mastering, he proceeded to equalize the tracks a small amount and to make the volume slightly louder. We never tried to make this CD as loud as current, over-limited trends, but just to match the volume of the rest of Elliott’s KRS catalog in a graceful way. Please note that none of this album is “remixed” from the master tapes - it is still composed of the mixes Elliott created himself.”

We will also be releasing Roman Candle on vinyl for the first time in the U.S.

From a Basement on the Hill was released posthumously in 2004 on ANTI- records.

With the addition of these two records Kill Rock Stars is now the home for all of Elliott Smith’s independent releases: Roman Candle, Elliott Smith, Either/Or, From a Basement on the Hill, and New Moon.

To celebrate the addition of these amazing records we are giving away a free, previously unreleased song entitled "Cecilia/Amanda". It was recorded at Jackpot! Recording Studio in 1997 by Larry Crane. An earlier version of this song was initially written and recorded by Elliott's high school band, Stranger Than Fiction, and was known as "Time is Ours Now". "Cecilia/Amanda" is a reworking of that song with almost completely different lyrics. Download/listen here.

Our Elliott Smith back catalog is also on sale until January 4th in our mail order and on iTunes.

if you live in MN, HIV NEEDS YOU! for 3 minutes please

the ryan white care act, which is the top source of funding for hiv/aids treatment across the nation, it's set to expire in a little over a week.
and they're leaving a reauthorization up to be re-drafted, which could be a bad thing considering all the dumbass conservatives making noise about their health care.

the minnesota aids project put together a little thing that sends e-mails to the senators and representative of anyone's given district. i've heard these things are disregarded and just acknowledge the subject matter and keep a tally of what people are carrying on about. it could yield a-mazing results.
our senators, one of whom has been totally silent about hiv/aids and all lgbt issues at all, signed a letter urging it to get passed.
the link goes to an easy to fill out form and should only take a moment to do!

PORTLAND CELLO PROJECT NEED HELP

A few days ago, we practiced packing for the trip and we ran into a problem, which is here re-enacted for you using the best professional volunteer actors we could find to demonstrate the experience. (Our experience in residency with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival last week taught us a thing or two about acting!!)

The Portland Cello Project earns every penny we have from ticket sales and sales of our CD’s and Tee-Shirts. We’ve been pinching our pennies and barely paying ourselves to perform for this labor of love over the past year to ensure that this tour can happen… but we need a little more help…

SUBSCRIPTIONS
We’ve come up with a way you can help out that’s NOT simply donating money to us or giving us a handout. I realized we have this massive library of unreleased recordings (since we play a completely new show for almost every big concert, and we record most of our shows), and we should start mastering those and making them available to the public, along with a bunch of other perks we’ve dreamed up.

The way we want to do this is by offering you the opportunity to become a subscribing member of the Portland Cello Project. Membership costs an annual fee, and can be purchased at various tiers. Tiers start as low as $25, and you can get all kinds of things as a subscribing member depending initially on the tier you choose, such as:

Monthly downloads of unreleased recordings
A subscriber-only, limited edition DVD of footage from all sorts of live performances
Invites to a free subscriber appreciation concert in the fall
And even chances to ride around in the new tour van with us or get private performances for your party, wedding or other event!
Subscription information and all the details on the different tiers can be found here:
Portland Cello Project Subscription Tiers

Every little bit helps. We have a fair amount of money saved towards a van already, but an extra $5,000 or so would ensure we have something that’s safe and reliable on this tour and many more to come. Thus, our goal is to raise at least $5,000 through these subscriptions by October 1st. We hope you can help us out!

Bullied student tickled pink by schoolmates' T-shirt campaign

Last Updated: Wednesday, September 19, 2007 | 12:25 AM AT

Two Nova Scotia students are being praised across North America for the way they turned the tide against the bullies who picked on a fellow student for wearing pink.

The victim — a Grade 9 boy at Central Kings Rural High School in the small community of Cambridge — wore a pink polo shirt on his first day of school.

David Shepherd, left, and Travis Price decided to spread word of their 'sea of pink' campaign on the internet.David Shepherd, left, and Travis Price decided to spread word of their 'sea of pink' campaign on the internet.

Bullies harassed the boy, called him a homosexual for wearing pink and threatened to beat him up, students said.

Two Grade 12 students — David Shepherd and Travis Price — heard the news and decided to take action.

"I just figured enough was enough," said Shepherd.

They went to a nearby discount store and bought 50 pink shirts, including tank tops, to wear to school the next day.

'Sea of pink' support

Then the two went online to e-mail classmates to get them on board with their anti-bullying cause that they dubbed a "sea of pink."

But a tsunami of support poured in the next day.

Not only were dozens of students outfitted with the discount tees, but hundreds of students showed up wearing their own pink clothes, some head-to-toe.

When the bullied student, who has never been identified, walked into school to see his fellow students decked out in pink, some of his classmates said it was a powerful moment. He may have even blushed a little.

"Definitely it looked like there was a big weight lifted off his shoulders. He went from looking right depressed to being as happy as can be," said Shepherd.

And there's been nary a peep from the bullies since, which Shepherd says just goes to show what a little activism will do.

"If you can get more people against them … to show that we're not going to put up with it and support each other, then they're not as big as a group as they think are," he says.

The students' "sea of pink" campaign did not go unnoticed outside the province. U.S. talk show host Ellen DeGeneres expressed interest in their story, and other schools are talking about holding their own "pink day."

"It's been totally overwhelming for us. I mean we're just two local boys and I mean we're getting calls from like Alaska and e-mails. It's just phenomenal the support that we've gotten from across the globe," said Price.

The school principal, understandably, was flush with pride.

"You're always hearing about the youth of the world and how bad things are. Well, they're not that bad," said Stephen Pearl.
