See Xiu Xiu and Donate to a Great Cause

When Xiu Xiu return from the UK, they’ll head out on their US tour. On the road, the band will be fundraising for At The Crossroads, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that helps street youth through counseling, outreach, and other services.

The band is asking for donations of any amount, and certain amounts of donation will come with specific prizes.

$1 (show only): Everyone who donates a dollar or more at the show will get together at the end of the show for a big group picture. The band will then post these pictures online.

$5: The band will mail you a postcard, probably made by Xiu Xiu, sent while on the road.

$10: Xiu Xiu will email one of a kind picture of the band on the road + description of what's going on before and after, not during.

$30: The band will mail you any random thing bought at a gas station, thrift store, or anywhere! from the road

$50: The band will mail you a special David Horvitz collection of Xiu Xiu photos.

If a collective total of $5000 of donations is reached, Xiu Xiu will release a never before released song, a collaboration with Mary Pearson (High Places), for free to download.

Please note: Everything but the group pictures will be offered online and at the show.

At the end of fundraising, the band will read out the names of everyone who donated on camera and will put the video online.

last night was the first time i'd seen quasi since they opened for elliott smith at la luna in portland--- way back in may 1998. i was a sophomore in high school at the time. some how i was able to let my mom talk me into going to the show with some friends (i think my dad was out of town at the time or something...) my friend dennis did a u-turn on the burnside bridge! haha... anyhow, quasi was awesome last night. fun times. see them on tour!

We are collecting stories of how people got into the band/shows they saw/memories/testimonials etc.

It would be awesome if you wanted to contribute. It doesn’t have to be fancy or well-worded, we’d just like you to leave a record of your experience and get an idea of what Bikini Kill means to you. Maybe it’s your reaction to a song we wrote, something weird that happened at one of our shows, a personal anecdote or just WHATEVER. Send yr story to bkillarchive@gmail.com and we will post it or just leave a comment somewhere on the site. You can also send us images to post.

Please help us spread the word. To document the history (or herstory) of the band it is necessary to include an oral history from “the fans”. We say fans for lack of a better word—a more expansive term would be inclusive of friends, peers, comrades, co-conspirators and imply participation rather than an audience separate from the band—which is what we hope to achieve with this interactive approach.

I remember I was dating this guy when I was 13 in like, 1995, and we got really competitive over who knew more about music. Then I bought the first Kill Rock Stars compilation and was like, ‘fuck it, I’ll take my own music for myself.’ I’d discovered Bikini Kill and he couldn’t have them. I bought every 7″ and album I could find, as well as anything else the band members were in (The Frumpies, Suture, The Fakes, etc.). The songs validated every twisted, sticky teenage girl experience I went through and anti-pleasure dissertation was the only thing I needed when said guy betrayed me in the most high school possible way. When I was 15 I wrote a letter thanking Kathleen Hanna, and she sent me back all her fanzines and ‘The Most Beautiful Girl is a Dead Girl’ and a bunch of stickers and a note that said “Don’t let them get you down.” That year I formed my own all girl band, and now I treat adolescent girls who are trauma survivors. It’s always extremely hard for me to stop myself from making them mix CDs starting with White Boy. It’s 15 years later and I still tell people that Bikini Kill is my all-time favorite band. Particularly my clients.

have you ever bought an album because a band harassed you (or asked you to be their fan or sent you messages or whatever) on facebook or myspace or some social networking site?

just curious.

UPDATE: the change of people asking you to be a "friend" on myspace and people asking you to be a "fan" on facebook is what made me think about this. it's esp. weird when it's from friends. aren't they happy enough with me being a friend? i got to be a fan too?

well that and the combination of logging into my old band's myspace for the first time in forever and seeing that all the messages were from bands i had never heard of telling me to buy their album on itunes.
