if you were a band would you rather have 100,000 fans but only sell 1,000 records, or have only 10,000 fans, but every one of them buys the record?

Well, I think if you had 100,000 fans, they would have your music somehow, and I think that matters more than how much of a profit you are making from selling your music.
And the kids that would have purchased the music could spread the music through tapes made from the record, or cd's, or on the web.

I'd rather have the message/music out to more people, than less people with more profit.
